Strong Thunderstorm Moving Through Southeastern Rowan and Toward High Rock Lake

A strong thunderstorm is moving across southeastern Rowan County and will impact parts of northeastern Cabarrus County and the High Rock Lake area through 5:30 PM EDT.

At 4:56 PM, Doppler radar indicated a storm approximately 12 miles east of Kannapolis, or about 4 miles south of Rockwell, tracking northeast at 15 mph. While not currently severe, the storm is producing wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea-sized hail.

Areas Likely to Be Affected:

• Rockwell

• Gold Hill

• High Rock Lake

• High Rock community (Rowan/Davidson county line)

Hazards:

• Wind gusts up to 40 mph – may down small limbs and blow around lightweight objects

• Pea-sized hail – could cause minor damage to vehicles or outdoor furniture

• Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning – lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from the storm

What You Should Do:

• If you are outdoors or on the water, seek shelter immediately.

• Secure any loose outdoor items.

• Be alert for rapidly changing conditions, especially near High Rock Lake.

This is not a severe thunderstorm warning, but strong storms like this can still be hazardous, especially in exposed or rural areas.
