The National Weather Service has issued an alert for a strong thunderstorm impacting parts of east-central Iredell County and heading into northwestern Rowan County through 5:45 PM EDT.

At 4:53 PM, Doppler radar detected a storm near Troutman, about 5 miles south of Statesville, moving east at 10 mph. This slow-moving storm is producing wind gusts up to 50 mph and nickel-sized hail.

Areas Likely to Be Affected:

  • Troutman

  • Statesville (southern/eastern areas)

  • Cleveland (northwestern Rowan County)

  • Lake Norman State Park

  • Mount Ulla

  • Piedmont Research Station

Hazards:

  • Wind gusts up to 50 mph – capable of downing small tree limbs and blowing around unsecured outdoor objects

  • Nickel-sized hail – may cause minor damage to vehicles and outdoor furniture

  • Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning – a threat even away from the storm core

Safety Precautions:

  • If you are outdoors, seek immediate shelter in a building or enclosed vehicle.

  • Avoid being on or near open water and elevated terrain, especially near Lake Norman State Park.

  • Secure or bring in outdoor objects that may blow around.

This is not a severe thunderstorm warning, but the storm is strong enough to produce dangerous weather conditions and should be taken seriously—especially with its potential for hail and gusty winds.

Rowan County Weather will continue tracking this storm and provide updates if conditions intensify or if a warning is issued.
