Rowan County’s Foggy Mornings: Why They Happen and When They’ll Clear

Wednesday, June 11, 2025 - 1:52pm

If your mornings have started with a blanket of fog this week, you’re not alone. Rowan County has seen several foggy starts recently—and there’s a scientific reason why.

Let’s break down what’s causing it, and when it usually clears.

Why Fog Forms in Rowan County

The type of fog we’ve been seeing is called radiation fog. It forms overnight, when:

  • Skies are mostly clear

  • Winds are calm or very light

  • Humidity levels are high

  • And ground temperatures cool rapidly after sunset

As the ground cools, so does the layer of air just above it. If that air contains enough moisture, it condenses into fog, often settling in low-lying areas and valleys—something we have plenty of in Rowan County.

The Role of Calm Winds and Humidity

When winds are calm, the atmosphere isn’t stirred up enough to mix drier air downward. Combine that with humidity levels above 90%, and you have the perfect environment for thick morning fog, especially around rivers, farmland, and forested areas.

When Does It Usually Clear?

In most cases, fog in Rowan County burns off between 8 and 9 AM, once the sun rises high enough to warm the ground. The stronger the sunshine, the faster the fog dissipates.

However, if clouds linger or humidity stays elevated, fog can hang on longer—sometimes until 10 AM or later, particularly in shaded or rural zones.

Will It Continue?

As long as we remain in a warm, humid pattern with calm overnight conditions, fog will continue to be a morning factor for Rowan County—especially in early summer. The good news? Once the sun breaks through, most days quickly turn sunny and dry.

Foggy starts can make the morning commute tricky, so keep headlights on low beam, leave extra travel time, and follow Rowan County Weather for daily updates when visibility is an issue.
