Posted June 10, 2025 – Rowan County Weather

Rowan County is under a Level 1 – Marginal Risk for severe weather today, according to the Storm Prediction Center. While this is the lowest level on the five-tier severe weather scale, it still means isolated storms could pack a punch this afternoon and evening.

What’s Causing Today’s Storm Setup?

A mid-level trough is sliding eastward across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, helping to create lift in the atmosphere. Ahead of it, a warm and moist airmass is already in place across the Carolinas. As temperatures climb into the mid-80s this afternoon, the atmosphere will destabilize, leading to scattered thunderstorm development after 2:00 PM.

What Are the Main Concerns?

The primary threat in Rowan County today will be isolated strong wind gusts, particularly with any short-lived storm clusters or line segments that move through the area.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Gusty winds of 40 to 60 mph possible in the strongest storms

  • Brief downpours that could cause ponding on roads

  • Frequent lightning in some of the stronger cells

The National Weather Service does not expect widespread severe weather, but one or two storms may become briefly strong enough to trigger a warning or localized damage.

Timing Breakdown

  • 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM: Storms may begin developing in the mountains and foothills

  • 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM: Best window for storms to reach Rowan County

  • After 8:00 PM: Most activity should wind down

What You Should Do

  • Keep weather alerts enabled on your phone

  • Don’t ignore dark skies and gusty winds even without a warning

  • Be cautious on the roads during downpours

We’ll be tracking radar throughout the day with updates here and on social media if anything stronger develops.
