Friday’s Marginal Risk vs. Saturday’s Slight Risk

Thursday, June 5, 2025 - 7:59am

What’s the Difference and What Should You Expect?

Rowan County is heading into an unsettled stretch of weather, and the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed our area under two different severe weather risk levels over the next 48 hours. Here’s what that means — and what you should be watching for.

Friday: Level 1 – Marginal Risk

On Friday, Rowan County sits under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms. This means isolated strong to severe storms will be possible, especially during the afternoon and early evening.

What to Expect Friday:

  • Scattered showers and storms after 2 PM

  • A few storms could produce gusty winds and brief downpours

  • Severe weather will be isolated, not widespread

  • Storms will be quick-moving and hit-or-miss

This level is often issued when ingredients are just supportive enough for a few strong storms, but most areas will avoid severe weather.

Saturday: Level 2 – Slight Risk

Saturday’s setup is more concerning. The SPC has issued a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for Rowan County — which means the potential is higher for organized severe storms to impact the area.

What to Expect Saturday:

  • A mix of sun and clouds during the day will allow for heating

  • Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop by mid to late afternoon

  • Some storms could produce:

    • Damaging wind gusts

    • Large hail

    • Frequent lightning

    • Locally heavy rainfall

Storms Saturday could be more widespread and longer-lived than Friday, especially heading into the early evening.

What’s the Takeaway?

While both days come with thunderstorm chances, Saturday carries a stronger chance for impactful weather. Outdoor events, sports, or graduation celebrations will need to be flexible.
