As we turn the page to June, Rowan County starts the month with a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather, according to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC). But what exactly does that mean for you today?

What Is a Marginal Risk?

A Marginal Risk signals that isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible, but they’re expected to be limited in coverage, duration, or intensity. Most areas won’t see severe weather — but a few spots could experience brief, localized impacts.

Why Rowan County Is Included

A stalled front is draped from Tennessee through the Carolinas today. While moisture levels aren’t overly high, sunshine and seasonably cool air aloft are creating enough instability for scattered afternoon thunderstorms.

These storms may develop after 2 PM and drift across the area through early evening. While not everyone will see rain, those that do could experience:

  • Isolated damaging wind gusts

  • Small hail in stronger cells

  • Brief heavy rainfall and lightning

What Could Make Storms Stronger?

Winds just above the surface (shear values around 25–30 knots) are supportive of some storm organization. That means we could see a few stronger storm clusters capable of more concentrated wind gusts or small pockets of hail.

However, confidence in widespread severe weather remains low, and coverage should remain scattered.

Timing the Threat

  • 1 PM – 2 PM: A few isolated showers could begin to pop.

  • 2 PM – 7 PM: Main window for scattered thunderstorms.

  • After 8 PM: Activity fades as the atmosphere stabilizes.

Final Thoughts

“Today isn’t a washout or a high-end severe weather day, but it’s still a good idea to stay weather-aware,” said Steve Monday, Chief Forecaster at Rowan County Weather. “A Marginal Risk means storms could catch some folks off guard, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours.”

Rowan County Weather will continue monitoring radar and provide updates if any warnings are issued.
