Rowan County is under the gun for two separate rounds of potentially impactful weather, with risks outlined for Thursday and a more robust threat on Friday.
Thursday – Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5)
The Storm Prediction Center places Rowan County in a Marginal Risk for severe storms today. Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening, especially after 3 PM. The biggest concerns today include:
-
Isolated strong wind gusts
-
Brief heavy downpours
-
Lightning
Storms are not expected to be widespread or long-lived, but any cell that strengthens could briefly become strong. Keep an eye on the radar through the evening hours.
Friday – Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5)
A more potent setup arrives Friday as a cold front sweeps across the region. The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg notes that:
-
Thunderstorms will move in from Tennessee late Friday morning, impacting the North Carolina mountains around noon.
-
The strongest storms are expected from 2 PM to 6 PM across the Piedmont, including Rowan County.
Hazards Friday may include:
-
Damaging wind gusts capable of downing trees and power lines
-
Large hail
-
A couple of brief tornadoes cannot be ruled out
-
Localized flooding, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas
“Timing is going to be key with this system,” said Steve Monday, Chief Forecaster for Rowan County Weather. “If the front moves through faster than expected, the worst of the storms may shift east of us. But if it slows down, our severe weather risk could increase right here in Rowan County.”
Looking Ahead
Once the front moves through, a quiet and dry weekend is expected. Temperatures will be seasonable with highs in the mid-70s and lows in the upper 50s to near 60.
