Tracking the Pattern Behind This Week’s Stormy Stretch

Rowan County, NC (May 27, 2025) – If you've been watching the radar and wondering when you'll finally see the sun again, you're not alone. A stalled weather pattern is keeping Rowan County and much of the Carolinas stuck in a cool, damp, and dreary stretch to kick off the final week of May.

What’s Causing All the Rain?

A stationary front draped across the Southeast, combined with moisture-rich air from the Atlantic and Gulf, is fueling rounds of rainfall across our area. Each day, we've seen waves of low pressure riding along this front, sparking showers and the occasional thunderstorm—many of them slow-moving.

In meteorological terms, we're experiencing what's called a “training” pattern, where storms move over the same areas repeatedly, leading to localized flooding concerns and steady rainfall totals that add up over time.

Rainfall Totals & Outlook

Since Memorial Day weekend, most of Rowan County has picked up between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain, with more on the way. Here's how things are shaping up in the days ahead:

Tuesday (Today):
Rain and isolated thunderstorms continue into the afternoon and evening. Heavy pockets possible. High near 58 degrees.

Wednesday:
Morning storms taper off with gradual clearing by afternoon. High near 72 degrees.

Thursday-Friday:
Scattered afternoon thunderstorms return, though coverage won’t be as widespread as earlier in the week.

Saturday:
The payoff—sunny skies and a high in the mid 70s. A great day to plan for outdoor events or simply enjoy the fresh air.

Should You Worry About Severe Weather?

The Storm Prediction Center has placed Rowan County under a General Thunderstorm Risk for Tuesday and Wednesday, meaning severe weather is not expected, but lightning, gusty winds, and brief heavy rain are still possible.

Flooding remains the primary concern in low-lying or poorly drained areas, especially during periods of intense downpours.

When Will It Finally Dry Out?

The short answer: Saturday.

We expect improving weather Wednesday afternoon and a return to more typical late-May conditions by the weekend. That means warmer days, lower rain chances, and finally a chance to open the windows or fire up the grill.
