Coca-Cola 600 Weather Watch: Will Rain Impact the Race?

Saturday, May 24, 2025 - 7:54am

As fans gear up for one of NASCAR’s crown jewel events, weather could once again play a role in how Sunday unfolds at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Sunday Forecast:
Skies will be mostly cloudy throughout the day with highs reaching the upper 60s to near 70 degrees. The chance of showers increases in the afternoon, with the highest likelihood for rain between 4 PM and 10 PM, right in the window for the green flag and early race laps.

Rain Timing Matters:
While the chance of precipitation is around 40 percent, any showers that develop could be enough to delay the start or bring out red flags during the race. Fortunately, projected rainfall amounts remain light—generally less than a tenth of an inch—and no widespread severe weather is expected.

Winds will be light and variable, with limited instability, reducing the threat for storms, but still keeping a persistent drizzle or light shower in play during the evening.

What Fans at the Track Should Know:

  • Bring ponchos or light rain gear—umbrellas may not be permitted in some grandstand sections.

  • Tailgating and fan zone events earlier in the day should be mostly dry, but keep an eye on radar starting mid-afternoon.

  • If showers occur, track drying efforts could take 1 to 2 hours depending on moisture levels and temperature.

Historical Context:
Rain delays aren’t new to the Coca-Cola 600. In 2020, the race was red-flagged for over an hour due to a passing shower. Sunday’s setup looks similar—hit-or-miss showers, not a total washout.

Rowan County Weather will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates on social media throughout the day Sunday, especially if radar trends change.
