While parts of western North Carolina and upstate South Carolina prepare for the potential of strong to severe storms this afternoon, Rowan County is likely to stay quiet — and there are a few important reasons why.
What the SPC Outlook Shows
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a Level 2 – Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms today, but that risk is focused along and west of Interstate 26, including areas like Asheville, Hendersonville, and Greenville, SC. Rowan County, by contrast, sits under a General Thunderstorm Risk — the lowest level on the SPC scale.
This means that while an isolated shower or rumble of thunder can't be ruled out here, widespread storms or anything severe is very unlikely.
Geography Makes a Difference
One key reason for this split in risk: the mountains.
Storms forming in the Tennessee Valley today will likely strengthen as they move into the western Carolinas, but as they cross the Blue Ridge and into the Piedmont, they typically lose intensity. Cooler air aloft and reduced instability on the eastern side of the mountains often weaken storms before they reach Rowan County.
Weak Upper-Level Support
Another reason Rowan County isn’t in the crosshairs today is limited upper-level energy. While the atmosphere west of us is more favorable for storm development — with higher wind shear and moisture — the ingredients just don’t come together over our area.
With only weak lift and less instability over the Piedmont, the chance of storms firing here is low. And those that do will likely remain brief, spotty, and non-severe.
What’s Next?
We’ll be watching the next round of storm chances Tuesday night into early Wednesday, when a stronger system brings a better shot at rain and rumbles, even here in Rowan County.
But for now, enjoy the dry and mostly sunny weather today, with highs near 83 degrees and light southwest winds. We’ll keep monitoring trends and update if anything changes.
