Storm Outlook for Monday: Rowan County in General Thunderstorm Risk

Sunday, May 18, 2025 - 5:44pm

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a severe weather outlook for Monday, May 19, highlighting the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms across portions of the Western Carolinas and Northeast Georgia. While Rowan County is included only in the general thunderstorm risk area, nearby counties to the southwest face a higher chance for severe weather.

What to Expect in Rowan County
For Rowan County, Monday's forecast includes a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 PM, with increasing cloud cover through the afternoon. While the risk for damaging winds or large hail remains low locally, lightning and brief downpours are still possible in any isolated storm that develops.

Severe Threat to the South and West
Areas such as Greenville, Anderson, and Greenwood in South Carolina, as well as parts of western North Carolina near Asheville, fall under a Marginal (Level 1 of 5) or Slight Risk (Level 2) for severe storms. These areas could see stronger wind gusts and hail, especially during the mid-afternoon to evening hours.

Forecast Uncertainty
Forecasters note that one of the key challenges Monday is how much storms will weaken as they move eastward into the Piedmont. While instability may decrease as they approach Rowan County, it’s still possible for a few storms to hold together into the evening.

Looking Ahead
Another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected late Tuesday into early Wednesday across the region. Rowan County could see higher rain chances during that time, with a better signal for widespread activity.

Rowan County Weather will continue to monitor storm development and provide updates if any watches or warnings are issued.
