Midweek Rainmaker: What to Know About the Upcoming Pattern Shift
By Steve Monday – Rowan County Weather
May 5, 2025
After a picture-perfect start to the week with sunshine and mild temperatures, Rowan County is set to see a shift in the weather pattern beginning late Wednesday. A developing system will bring increasing rain chances through the end of the week, and while this won’t be a washout, it could impact outdoor plans and local field conditions.
Here’s what to expect:
Monday–Wednesday:
Dry and comfortable. Highs will hover in the low to mid 70s with light winds and mostly sunny skies through midweek. Tuesday and Wednesday will offer ideal conditions for yardwork, sports practices, and other outdoor activities.
Wednesday Night:
A weak disturbance pushes in from the west late Wednesday night. Showers may begin to develop after 2 a.m., though coverage will remain isolated. Rain chance: 20%.
Thursday:
Partly sunny skies with spotty showers developing by late morning into the afternoon. Rain chance: 30%. Rainfall totals should remain light, but models suggest more widespread activity by evening across the Carolinas.
Thursday Night – Friday:
This is the main window for measurable rainfall. Moisture increases as a cold front approaches. Rain chances rise to 40% Thursday night and remain elevated through Friday afternoon, with a few rumbles of thunder possible. Totals could range from 0.25” to 0.5”, with locally higher amounts in heavier pockets.
What This Means for Rowan County:
-
No severe weather is expected, but plan for occasional wet periods Thursday and Friday.
-
Soil moisture will increase, which may slow drying for area ballfields.
-
Allergy levels may temporarily drop during and after showers, offering a brief break from pollen.
-
Temperatures dip into the upper 60s by Friday, bringing a cooler finish to the week.
Looking Ahead:
By Saturday, drier air is expected to return just in time for the weekend. We’ll be watching closely to confirm how quickly that clearing arrives.
