In the first NASCAR national series event at "The Rock" since 2013, Tyler Ankrum delivered a commanding performance to capture the checkered flag in the Black's Tire 200. The win came after a dramatic final stretch in which several front-runners, including Chandler Smith, ran out of fuel, setting the stage for Ankrum to seize control and take the historic victory.
For fans and drivers alike, the day was packed with nostalgia and excitement. Rockingham's distinctive surface, newly remeasured to 0.94 miles and recently repaved, produced high-speed action while maintaining the grit and charm that made it a beloved stop on NASCAR's schedule for decades.
The return of racing to Rockingham wasn't just about looking back. It signaled a fresh start and a critical opportunity for NASCAR to reconnect with its North Carolina roots. The atmosphere at the track was electric, with sellout crowds for Saturday's upcoming Xfinity race and drivers throughout the garage praising the facility's upgrades.
"This place means a lot to so many people in the sport," said one veteran crew chief. "To see it back on the schedule and producing a race like that shows it belongs."
Friday's race was also the final event in this year's Triple Truck Challenge, adding extra intensity to the competition. While Chandler Smith and Daniel Hemric were eligible for the $150,000 bonus, it was Ankrum who walked away with the biggest trophy of all.
The weekend at Rockingham is far from over, with Saturday's North Carolina Education Lottery 250 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series set to showcase another round of action. But if Friday is any indication, the sport may have found new momentum in an old favorite.
Rockingham is officially back on track — and North Carolina race fans couldn’t be happier.
