Severe Thunderstorms Possible Sunday Across Western Carolinas—What Rowan County Residents Should Know

Saturday, April 5, 2025 - 9:10am

Rowan County, NC – April 5, 2025

Residents in Rowan County should stay weather-aware this Sunday as thunderstorms, some potentially severe, are expected to impact the Western Carolinas and Northeast Georgia ahead of an approaching cold front.

Storms are expected to develop Sunday afternoon and continue into the night. While the greatest risk for severe weather lies to the southwest—particularly in northeast Georgia and extreme southwestern North Carolina—isolated severe storms remain possible in our region.

What to Expect in Rowan County

The primary concern with this storm system is damaging wind gusts, which could bring down trees and power lines and potentially cause minor structural damage. Large hail, up to two inches in diameter, may also accompany the strongest storms. While the overall tornado risk remains low, it should be noted that an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Heavy downpours could lead to brief localized flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Timing and Uncertainty

One of the challenges is the timing of the system. Models suggest a delay in storm development, potentially pushing the strongest activity into the evening or night hours, after peak daytime heating. This timing could reduce the severity of storms overall—but residents should not let their guard down. Some forecast models still indicate the potential for isolated strong to severe storms during the afternoon.

Looking Ahead

After the front passes through Monday, Rowan County can expect a drop in temperatures. Cooler nights are forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, with a chance for frost in areas east of the mountains.

Residents are encouraged to continue to monitor Rowan County Weather for the latest updates and to have a safety plan in place should conditions worsen.
