
Four Counties, One Region: Why the Forecast Can Be Different Just a Few Miles Away
One week ago, Rowan County Weather officially became Rowan County Weather and Regional Forecast.
The change wasn't about moving away from Rowan County. Rowan County remains home and will continue to be the primary focus. Instead, the change recognizes something I've seen countless times while forecasting weather across our area:
Weather doesn't stop at the county line.
Over the past week, I've provided dedicated daily forecasts for Rowan, Davie and Davidson counties. Beginning today, Cabarrus County has joined that list, giving me four counties with their own specific daily forecasts.
Those four counties are neighbors. On many days, their forecasts look almost identical.
But sometimes they don't.
A thunderstorm can drench one county while another stays completely rain-free. Temperatures can differ by several degrees. A boundary can pass through one community hours before reaching another. Severe weather can develop in one part of the region while communities only a few miles away experience nothing more than clouds and distant thunder.
That's exactly why having individual county forecasts matters.
Four Counties Under the Same Weather Pattern
Rowan, Davie, Davidson and Cabarrus counties are close enough that they're frequently influenced by the same large-scale weather systems.
If a strong cold front crosses North Carolina, all four counties will probably experience it. If high pressure settles over the Carolinas, all four will likely enjoy similar stretches of sunshine. A large winter storm could affect the entire region.
Think of that as the big-picture weather pattern.
But forecasting doesn't end there.
Within that larger pattern are smaller atmospheric features that can make conditions very different from one community to another.
That's especially true during summertime thunderstorm season.
A 20-Mile Difference Can Matter
Imagine thunderstorms developing during a hot summer afternoon.
The atmosphere may be favorable for storms across the entire region, but thunderstorms don't necessarily form everywhere.
One storm could develop near Statesville and move southeast toward western Rowan County. Another could form around the Charlotte metro and move toward Cabarrus County.
Meanwhile, Davidson County could remain between the storms and receive very little rainfall.
All four counties were under the same general weather pattern, but their actual weather could be completely different.
Even within an individual county, conditions can vary dramatically.
It could be pouring rain in Salisbury while southern Rowan County remains dry. Concord could be dealing with a thunderstorm while Kannapolis hasn't received a drop. Lexington could have heavy rain while another part of Davidson County sees sunshine.
That's one of the challenges — and one of the fascinating parts — of forecasting weather in the Piedmont.
Today's Forecast Is a Great Example
The forecast for this week demonstrates why I don't simply copy one forecast and apply it to every county.
Today and Tuesday are very similar across the four-county area: sunshine, comfortable humidity and temperatures generally in the 80s.
By Wednesday night, moisture begins returning and shower and thunderstorm chances increase.
Then we get to Thursday and Friday.
For Thursday, the forecast currently calls for:
Rowan County: 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms
Davie County: 60% chance
Davidson County: 70% chance
Cabarrus County: 60% chance
Those aren't huge differences, but they're real differences in the forecast.
Friday becomes even more interesting:
Rowan County: 50% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms
Davie County: 30% chance
Davidson County: 40% chance
Cabarrus County: 50% chance
The entire region has an unsettled weather pattern, but the forecast isn't identical everywhere.
That's why each county gets its own forecast.
Why Thunderstorms Make Local Forecasting Difficult
Summertime thunderstorms are among the best examples of why local weather forecasting matters.
A cold front hundreds of miles long is relatively easy to identify on a weather map.
A thunderstorm can be only a few miles across.
Storms can also create their own miniature weather systems.
When rain-cooled air rushes outward from a thunderstorm, it creates an outflow boundary. That boundary can travel away from the original storm and sometimes trigger completely new thunderstorms.
That means a storm over Davie County could eventually influence thunderstorm development in Rowan County.
A storm in Mecklenburg County could send an outflow boundary toward Cabarrus County.
A cluster of storms moving through the Triad could send boundaries south toward Davidson County.
These smaller features aren't always captured perfectly several days in advance.
That's why forecasts become more detailed as an event gets closer.
Geography Matters Too
Our four counties also occupy different parts of the Piedmont.
Davie County lies north of Rowan County, while Davidson County extends to the north and northeast. Cabarrus County is immediately south of Rowan County and extends toward the Charlotte metropolitan area.
Rowan County sits near the middle of this four-county coverage area.
That geography matters when fronts, thunderstorms and other weather features move across the Piedmont. A line of storms approaching from the northwest may reach Davie County first before moving toward Rowan County, while activity moving out of the Triad may affect Davidson County before reaching areas farther south.
Storms developing around the Charlotte metro can approach Cabarrus County and potentially continue toward southern Rowan County.
Those differences in location can influence storm timing, rainfall coverage, temperatures and which communities experience the most significant weather.
The differences may be subtle on many days, but weather forecasting is often about identifying subtle differences.
What Does a 30% or 60% Rain Chance Really Mean?
This week's forecast also provides a good opportunity to clear up one of the most common misunderstandings about weather forecasts.
If Davie County has a 30% chance of thunderstorms Friday, that doesn't mean it will rain for 30% of the day.
It also doesn't mean every location has to receive rain.
It represents the probability of measurable precipitation occurring at a particular location within the forecast area during the specified period.
That's why summertime forecasts can be frustrating.
You might see a 60% chance of thunderstorms and never receive a drop of rain at your house.
Meanwhile, someone 10 miles away could receive an inch of rain.
Both experiences can occur during the same forecast period.
County Lines Don't Control the Weather
Of course, the atmosphere has no idea where Rowan County ends and Davidson County begins.
A thunderstorm doesn't reach the county line and suddenly change direction.
County-specific forecasts are useful because they give us manageable geographic areas for communicating weather information. But when I'm tracking storms in real time, what matters more is where the storm is, where it's moving and which communities are in its path.
That's also why regional coverage is important.
If I'm watching a thunderstorm in Iredell County moving southeast at 25 mph, I'm not waiting for it to cross into Rowan County before paying attention.
What happens upstream matters.
The same applies to storms approaching Davie from the northwest, Davidson from the Triad or Cabarrus from the Charlotte area.
Regional awareness helps improve local awareness.
Why Add Cabarrus County?
Adding Cabarrus County to the dedicated daily forecasts is a natural extension of that approach.
Cabarrus borders Rowan County directly to the south. Weather moving between the Charlotte area, Cabarrus County and Rowan County frequently affects multiple parts of the region.
There are also strong community connections between the counties. People live in one county and work in another. Families travel between them. Students commute to colleges and universities throughout the region. People attend events, shop, work and spend their weekends beyond the county where they live.
Weather information becomes more useful when it reflects that reality.
Beginning today, the dedicated daily forecast lineup includes:
Rowan County
Davie County
Davidson County
Cabarrus County
Each will receive its own forecast based on the conditions expected for that county.
Rowan County Is Still Home
I want to make one thing very clear as the coverage continues to grow.
Rowan County isn't going anywhere.
This started as Rowan County Weather, and Rowan County remains home.
The expansion into Rowan County Weather and Regional Forecast is about adding useful information, not taking anything away from the coverage that's been provided for Rowan County over the years.
The Rowan County forecast will continue.
Local radar updates will continue.
Severe weather coverage will continue.
And when weather threatens Rowan County, covering that threat remains the priority.
The regional component simply gives me the opportunity to provide more context about what's happening around us — because what happens around Rowan County often determines what happens here next.
One Week Into Rowan County Weather and Regional Forecast
Today marks exactly one week since the name changed to Rowan County Weather and Regional Forecast.
In that short time, the goal has already started taking shape.
Instead of looking at Rowan County as an isolated spot on the map, I'm continuing to build coverage that looks at the larger weather pattern while still keeping individual communities and counties at the center of the forecast.
Rowan.
Davie.
Davidson.
And now Cabarrus.
Four neighboring counties. One interconnected weather pattern. Four forecasts designed to recognize that conditions aren't always identical from one county to the next.
Because the weather doesn't stop at the county line.
And neither should the forecast.
