Heavy Downpours Could Lead to Localized Flooding Across Rowan County Today

Rowan County will remain in an active weather pattern today as multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms move across the area.

Rain is expected at times through the morning, with thunderstorms becoming more widespread during the afternoon and evening. The main concern will be very heavy rainfall. Some storms may produce intense downpours over a short period of time, which could lead to localized flooding.

Low-lying areas, poor drainage locations and roads that commonly collect water will be the most vulnerable. Flooding could also develop where multiple storms repeatedly move over the same location.

The overall severe weather threat remains low, but an isolated strong storm cannot be ruled out. Any stronger storm could produce gusty winds, frequent lightning and sharply reduced visibility in heavy rain.

Today’s high temperature will be near 84 degrees, with an 80 percent chance of rain. Showers and thunderstorms will remain possible into tonight before gradually becoming less widespread after midnight.

Drivers should use extra caution during periods of heavy rain. Never attempt to drive through a flooded roadway, because the depth and condition of the road beneath the water may be impossible to determine.
