Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Davidson County Until 8 PM
The National Weather Service has issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch 498, which is in effect until 8:00 PM EDT for Davidson County and much of central North Carolina.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning, and heavy rainfall. It does not mean severe weather is occurring everywhere within the watch area, but residents should be prepared to act quickly if warnings are issued later today.
Davidson County Included in Watch
Davidson County is among 31 counties included in the watch area. Other nearby counties under the watch include Forsyth, Guilford, Randolph, Stanly, Alamance, Chatham, and Montgomery.
Communities such as Lexington and Thomasville are included in the watch.
Primary Threat Today
The greatest concern this afternoon and evening is damaging straight-line winds, which could exceed 60 mph in the strongest storms. These winds have the potential to:
- Down trees and large limbs
- Cause scattered power outages
- Damage roofs, siding, and other structures
- Blow around unsecured outdoor furniture and decorations
While damaging winds are expected to be the primary hazard, some storms may also produce:
- Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning
- Torrential rainfall leading to localized flooding
- Small hail
Timing
Thunderstorms are expected to become more widespread through the afternoon and continue into the evening before gradually diminishing after sunset.
Not every location will experience severe weather, but any storm that develops could intensify quickly.
