Weekend Cold Front Set to Bring Relief After Days of Summer Heat

Wednesday, July 8, 2026 - 8:21am

After several days of temperatures climbing well into the 90s, relief is finally on the way for Rowan, Davie, and Davidson counties. A cold front moving through the Carolinas this weekend will not only increase our chances for showers and thunderstorms, but it will also usher in a much cooler and less humid air mass that will make it feel far more comfortable heading into next week.

One More Stretch of Summer Heat

Thursday through Saturday will continue to feel like the middle of July. Afternoon highs will climb into the lower to middle 90s each day, while humidity will push heat index values to around 100 to 102 degrees during the warmest part of the afternoon.

While isolated showers and thunderstorms will remain possible each afternoon, many communities will stay dry. Any storm that does develop could produce brief heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, and gusty winds.

If you'll be spending time outdoors through Saturday, continue to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle.

The Pattern Changes Saturday

The weather begins changing Saturday as a cold front approaches from the northwest.

Clouds will gradually increase during the day, and showers and thunderstorms will become more numerous during the afternoon and evening. This will be the best opportunity for widespread rainfall we've seen in several days.

Although a few storms could still become strong with gusty winds, the greater story will be the increase in rainfall coverage compared to the isolated storms we've experienced recently.

A Refreshing Sunday

Behind the cold front, temperatures take a noticeable drop.

Instead of afternoon highs in the mid-90s, many locations across Rowan, Davie, and Davidson counties will only reach the mid-80s on Sunday. Combined with lower humidity, it will feel dramatically different from the weather we've experienced over the past week.

Some showers and thunderstorms may still develop Sunday afternoon as the front settles south of the area, but overall conditions will continue improving as cooler air filters into the region.

Why It Will Feel So Much Better

The cold front will allow a cooler and drier air mass to move south into the Carolinas. At the same time, high pressure building over the Northeast is expected to reinforce the cooler air, helping temperatures remain below recent levels while reducing humidity.

That means mornings will feel more comfortable, afternoons won't be as oppressive, and outdoor activities will become much more enjoyable.

Looking Ahead

The cooler pattern is expected to continue into early next week, with temperatures remaining below what we've seen recently and humidity levels staying noticeably lower.

After several days of July heat, this weekend's cold front will provide a welcome break across the region. While you'll want to keep an eye on the sky for showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday, many people will gladly trade a few hours of rain for cooler afternoons and more comfortable evenings.
