Heat Advisory in Effect Today: Dangerous Heat Expected Across Rowan, Davie and Davidson Counties

Thursday, July 2, 2026 - 8:32am

Dangerous heat is expected across Rowan, Davie, and Davidson counties today as temperatures climb into the upper 90s and lower 100s this afternoon.

A Heat Advisory is in effect from Noon until 8:00 PM for much of central North Carolina, including our area. Heat index values are expected to reach 105 to 107 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended periods outdoors.

What to Expect

Today's forecast calls for:

  • Sunny skies
  • Afternoon highs between 99° and 101°
  • Heat index values of 105° to 107°
  • Light winds offering little relief

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will make it feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature.

Why This Heat Is So Dangerous

While a single hot day can be uncomfortable, this event is more concerning because of its duration.

The dangerous heat is expected to continue through the Fourth of July holiday weekend, with warm overnight temperatures only falling into the lower to middle 70s. Those warm nights provide very little opportunity for homes and people to cool down, allowing heat stress to build over several consecutive days.

Anyone without reliable air conditioning, people who work outdoors, young children, older adults, and those with chronic medical conditions face the greatest risk of heat-related illness.

Heat Safety Tips

If you must spend time outside today:

  • Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned building.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.
  • Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and anyone without adequate cooling.

Looking Ahead

Unfortunately, today's heat is only the beginning.

High temperatures around 100 degrees are expected to continue through the Independence Day holiday weekend before a more typical summertime pattern returns early next week. As the heat begins to ease, afternoon and evening thunderstorm chances will gradually increase beginning Monday.
