Heat Advisory Expanded: Davidson County Now Included as Dangerous Heat Spreads Across Central North Carolina

The National Weather Service has expanded the Heat Advisory to include Davidson County, along with numerous other counties across central North Carolina, as dangerously hot and humid conditions are expected Thursday.
The advisory is in effect from noon until 8:00 PM Thursday.
What to Expect
Afternoon temperatures will climb into the upper 90s, and when combined with the humidity, heat index values could reach 105 degrees.
The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those working or spending extended periods outdoors.
Davidson County Now Under a Heat Advisory
With Davidson County now included in the advisory, all three of Rowan County Weather's primary coverage areas—Rowan, Davie, and Davidson counties—are under a Heat Advisory for Thursday afternoon.
Anyone planning outdoor activities should prepare for dangerous heat during the peak afternoon and early evening hours.
Heat Safety Tips
The National Weather Service recommends:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Spend as much time as possible in air-conditioned buildings.
- Stay out of direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
- Check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and those without reliable air conditioning.
- Make sure pets have access to fresh water and shade.
- Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a few minutes.
If You Must Work Outdoors
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends:
- Taking frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations.
- Drinking water often, even before feeling thirsty.
- Working with a partner whenever possible so someone can recognize the early signs of heat illness.
If someone begins showing signs of heat stroke—including confusion, loss of consciousness, or a body temperature above 103 degrees—call 911 immediately. Heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency.
Looking Ahead
Dangerous heat will continue through the Independence Day holiday weekend, with highs remaining near 100 degrees across the area. While the weather will stay mostly dry through Saturday, the heat will remain the primary weather concern before daily thunderstorm chances begin increasing later this weekend.
