Storm Chances Continue Sunday Before Dangerous Heat Builds Across Rowan County Next Week

Saturday, June 27, 2026 - 6:44pm

After an active Saturday across Rowan County, I'll continue watching for additional showers and thunderstorms on Sunday before a prolonged stretch of dangerous heat settles into the region next week.

Sunday won't be a washout, but you'll want to keep an eye on the sky if you have outdoor plans. There is a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoon and evening. Some showers could arrive as early as Sunday morning as weakening storms move in from the northwest, followed by another opportunity for thunderstorms during the afternoon if the atmosphere is able to recover.

While widespread severe weather is not expected, a few storms could still produce damaging wind gusts, especially if sunshine allows temperatures to warm into the upper 80s and lower 90s.

High temperatures on Sunday will reach around 90 degrees, with muggy conditions making it feel even warmer during the afternoon.

Any storms will gradually diminish Sunday evening, with skies becoming mostly clear overnight and temperatures falling to around 70 degrees.

Beginning Monday, the weather pattern changes as a strong area of high pressure strengthens across the eastern United States.

Temperatures will steadily climb through the week with highs reaching 91 degrees Monday, 93 degrees Tuesday, 96 degrees Wednesday, and 100 degrees by Thursday.

While humidity levels will fluctuate, afternoon heat index values are expected to climb above 100 degrees, especially from the middle of the week through the Independence Day holiday weekend. There is growing potential for heat headlines later in the week if current trends continue.

Rain chances also become much lower after Monday, with most afternoon thunderstorms expected to remain confined to the mountains as the ridge strengthens.

What I'm Watching

  • Sunday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms remain possible. While widespread severe weather isn't expected, a few storms could still produce locally damaging wind gusts.
  • Mid to Late Week: Heat will continue building with highs climbing into the upper 90s to near 100 degrees. Heat index values above 100 degrees are expected, with the greatest potential for dangerous heat arriving Thursday and continuing into the Independence Day holiday weekend.
  • Rain Chances: After Monday, storm chances decrease significantly as high pressure strengthens over the Southeast.

I'll continue monitoring Sunday's storm potential and the increasingly dangerous heat expected later this week, providing updates as forecast confidence continues to increase.
