What I'm Watching
High pressure remains in control today, keeping Rowan County dry. Beginning Friday, moisture flowing in from the Atlantic around the Bermuda High will allow isolated to scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms to develop each day through the weekend. Coverage should remain limited, so many neighborhoods may stay completely dry while others briefly see heavy rain and lightning.
The more significant weather story will become the heat.
Afternoon temperatures in the middle 90s combined with increasing humidity will likely push heat index values between 100° and 103° this weekend. Looking ahead into the middle of next week, confidence continues to increase that heat indices could climb even higher, with some locations potentially approaching 105°, which is the threshold for Heat Advisory conditions.
If you're spending time outdoors this weekend or next week, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
My Bottom Line
This is a classic summertime forecast. Most of us will stay dry each day, but keep an eye on the sky during the afternoon and evening hours for a pop-up thunderstorm. The bigger headline will be the steadily increasing heat, so plan ahead if you have outdoor activities scheduled this weekend or early next week.
