Hot Monday Ahead With a Risk of Strong Storms by Evening

Good Sunday evening, Davidson County!

Monday remains the day to watch as a cold front approaches from the northwest. While much of the day will be hot and dry, shower and thunderstorm chances increase during the late afternoon and evening hours, and a few strong to severe storms cannot be ruled out.

Monday: Heat Peaks Before Storms Arrive

Clouds will gradually increase throughout the day Monday, but temperatures will still climb to around 94 degrees during the afternoon.

Southwest winds will increase to 6 to 11 mph with gusts reaching 21 mph at times.

A few isolated showers or thunderstorms could develop after 3 PM, but the better opportunity for storms arrives later in the day as a cold front approaches the region.

Severe Weather Threat

The atmosphere will become increasingly unstable Monday afternoon as heat and humidity build across central North Carolina.

Forecast guidance continues to indicate:

✔️ Moderate instability

✔️ Increasing moisture

✔️ Gusty southwest winds

✔️ A cold front moving into the region Monday evening

The primary threat remains:

Damaging straight-line winds

Additional hazards include:

Frequent lightning

Brief heavy rainfall

Downed tree limbs

Isolated power outages

The Storm Prediction Center continues to highlight much of central North Carolina in a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather.

Current indications suggest the greatest threat may remain north of Davidson County, but a few strong storms could certainly occur locally.

Timing

Based on the latest forecast guidance:

Morning and early afternoon: Hot and mainly dry

Late afternoon: Isolated storms possible

Main storm window: Approximately 4 PM through Midnight

Overnight: Storms gradually weaken and move east

Not everyone will receive rain, but any storm that develops could become strong quickly.

Monday Night

Showers and thunderstorms remain likely during the evening before ending overnight.

Skies gradually clear late with temperatures falling to around 68 degrees.

Tuesday: A Few Leftover Storms Possible

Tuesday will not be a washout, but a few additional showers and thunderstorms could develop during the afternoon as the front exits the area.

Expect increasing clouds with highs near 89 degrees.

Tuesday night brings a lingering chance of an evening storm before skies become partly cloudy with lows around 64 degrees.

Midweek Outlook

Wednesday looks excellent with:

Mostly sunny skies

High near 88°

Low near 66°

Humidity levels should be a bit more manageable as well.

Late Week Pattern

Typical summertime weather returns during the second half of the week.

Thursday brings a 30% chance of afternoon thunderstorms with highs near 92 degrees.

Additional storm chances remain in the forecast Thursday night and Friday.

My Take

Monday remains the most active weather day of the week.

While confidence is not especially high in widespread severe weather across Davidson County, confidence continues to increase that some thunderstorms will develop across the region Monday evening.

The biggest concern remains damaging wind gusts.

If you have outdoor plans Monday afternoon or evening, make sure you have a reliable way to receive weather warnings and be prepared to move indoors quickly if storms approach.
