Friday Could Be the Hottest Day So Far This Year in Rowan County

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Summer heat is arriving in full force across Rowan County, and Friday is shaping up to be the hottest day of the year so far for many locations.

Forecast highs are expected to climb into the mid-90s Friday afternoon, with some areas reaching around 96 degrees. When combined with increasing humidity, heat index values could rise to around 100 to 102 degrees.

While Rowan County is not currently under a Heat Advisory, conditions will still be hot enough to increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those spending extended periods outdoors.

Why It Will Feel So Hot

A strengthening ridge of high pressure over the southeastern United States is allowing temperatures to climb well above normal for mid-June.

In addition to the heat, overnight temperatures will only fall into the lower 70s. These warm nights limit the body's ability to recover from daytime heat, particularly for those without access to air conditioning.

The combination of multiple hot days, high humidity, and warm overnight temperatures can increase stress on the body even if official Heat Advisory criteria are not reached.

Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Your body often provides warning signs before a heat-related illness becomes serious.

Common symptoms include:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Muscle cramps
  • Weakness or unusual fatigue
  • Rapid heartbeat

If you experience any of these symptoms, move to a cooler location, drink water, and rest immediately.

Heat Stroke Is a Medical Emergency

Heat stroke can develop quickly and requires immediate medical attention.

Warning signs include:

  • Body temperature above 103 degrees
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Slurred speech
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Hot, red skin
  • Seizures

Call 911 immediately if someone is showing signs of heat stroke.

Staying Safe During the Heat

If you plan to be outdoors Friday, consider these safety tips:

✔ Drink water frequently, even if you do not feel thirsty.

✔ Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.

✔ Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

✔ Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, generally between noon and 6 PM.

✔ Never leave children or pets inside vehicles.

✔ Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and those without reliable cooling.

Storm Chances Return Friday Evening

While most of Friday will be dry, a chance of showers and thunderstorms develops late in the afternoon and evening. Some storms could produce gusty winds as they move into the area.

The weekend remains hot with highs in the lower to middle 90s before rain chances increase further Sunday and Monday.

For now, the biggest weather story remains the heat.

Take precautions, stay hydrated, and pay attention to what your body is telling you as summer-like conditions settle into Rowan County.
