Drought Monitor Update: Extreme Drought Continues Across Much of Rowan, Davie, and Davidson Counties
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor update shows little change across the region, with much of Rowan, Davie, and Davidson counties remaining in Extreme Drought (D3) conditions.
Areas shaded in red on the latest map remain classified as Extreme Drought, while areas shaded in tan continue to be classified as Severe Drought (D2).
Current Drought Conditions
For Rowan County, nearly 88% of the county remains under Extreme Drought conditions, while the remaining areas are classified as Severe Drought.
The latest drought statistics for Rowan County show:
87.93% of the county is in Extreme Drought (D3)
How Does This Compare to Earlier This Year?
While recent rainfall events have helped improve soil moisture and stream levels in some locations, the overall drought classification remains stubbornly high.
Three months ago, only 21.02% of Rowan County was classified in Extreme Drought. That figure has now increased to nearly 88%, highlighting how quickly drought conditions intensified during the spring.
Looking back one year ago, Rowan County was not experiencing drought conditions according to the Drought Monitor.
Can Upcoming Rain Chances Help?
The forecast includes scattered thunderstorm chances Friday evening, followed by increasing opportunities for showers and thunderstorms Sunday through early next week.
While any rainfall is welcome, drought improvement depends not only on how much rain falls but also how widespread the rainfall is across the county.
Summer thunderstorms often produce highly variable rainfall totals, meaning some locations may receive significant rain while others receive very little.
Looking Ahead
Although recent rain has provided some short-term relief, Rowan County, along with much of Davie and Davidson counties, remains firmly entrenched in severe to extreme drought conditions.
Continued periods of widespread rainfall will be needed in the coming weeks and months before significant improvements appear on the U.S. Drought Monitor.
Rowan County Weather will continue monitoring drought conditions and provide updates as new Drought Monitor data becomes available each week.
