Heat Returns Later This Week: Could Heat Index Values Approach 100 Degrees?
After a brief break from the heat on Tuesday, summer-like conditions are expected to make a strong comeback across Rowan County and surrounding areas later this week.
Temperatures on Tuesday will be held in check by increased cloud cover and scattered showers and thunderstorms, with highs expected to remain in the lower to middle 80s. However, that cooler weather won't last long.
By Wednesday, temperatures will rebound into the upper 80s, and by Thursday and Friday, highs are expected to climb into the lower and middle 90s across much of the area. Some locations across the Piedmont could even flirt with the upper 90s if cloud cover remains limited.
Why Is It Going To Feel So Hot?
The combination of hot temperatures and increasing humidity will be the main factor.
As moisture levels increase across the region, dew points will climb into the upper 60s and lower 70s. When temperatures reach the mid-90s and humidity remains elevated, the body has a more difficult time cooling itself through evaporation.
This results in heat index values — often called the "feels like" temperature — rising above the actual air temperature.
Current forecast trends suggest heat index values could approach or exceed 100 degrees during the afternoon hours Thursday, Friday, and into the upcoming weekend.
How Long Will The Heat Last?
Forecast guidance indicates that above-normal temperatures may persist through the weekend. While scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms could provide localized relief, they are not expected to significantly lower temperatures across the region.
The hottest period currently appears to be Thursday and Friday, when temperatures and humidity levels are expected to peak.
Heat Safety Reminders
As temperatures rise later this week:
Stay hydrated throughout the day.
Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Take frequent breaks if working outdoors.
Never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle.
Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone without reliable air conditioning.
The Bottom Line
Enjoy Tuesday's brief break from the heat because much hotter weather is on the way. Temperatures are expected to return to the 90s by Thursday and Friday, with humidity levels pushing heat index values toward 100 degrees or higher in some locations.
Rowan County Weather will continue monitoring forecast trends and will provide updates if heat advisories become necessary later this week.
