Will This Week's Rain Chances Help Rowan County's Drought?

Sunday, June 7, 2026 - 9:05am

After a hot and mostly dry weekend across Rowan County, daily chances for showers and thunderstorms are expected to return beginning Monday and continue through much of the upcoming week. While any rainfall is welcome given the ongoing drought, the bigger question remains: Will it be enough to make a meaningful difference?

The short answer is probably not.

Daily Storm Chances Return

A weather pattern change will bring increasing moisture and daily opportunities for scattered showers and thunderstorms from Monday through at least Thursday. Rain chances generally remain around 30 percent each day, with most of the activity expected during the afternoon and evening hours.

Unlike a widespread soaking rain event, this pattern favors typical summertime thunderstorms. These storms often produce highly variable rainfall amounts, meaning one neighborhood may receive a quick half-inch of rain while another just a few miles away receives little to nothing.

The Challenge With Summer Thunderstorms

Summer thunderstorms are often referred to as "hit-or-miss" storms for a reason.

These storms develop in pockets and can produce heavy rainfall over a small area while leaving surrounding locations completely dry. Because of this, rainfall totals can vary dramatically across Rowan County.

Even if some locations receive beneficial rainfall this week, widespread drought improvement typically requires repeated rain events covering a much larger area.

Current Drought Conditions Remain Serious

According to the latest drought information, much of Rowan County remains in Extreme Drought conditions.

Recent rainfall events have helped green up some vegetation and temporarily improve topsoil moisture in a few areas. However, deeper soil moisture deficits remain significant, and many ponds, streams, and groundwater sources continue to run below normal levels.

The upcoming week's scattered storms are unlikely to erase months of rainfall deficits.

What Would Be Needed?

Meaningful drought improvement generally requires widespread rainfall totals of several inches spread over multiple weeks.

While a few isolated locations could receive locally heavy rainfall from thunderstorms this week, most areas are not expected to receive the kind of widespread soaking rain needed to significantly improve drought conditions.

The good news is that the return of daily storm chances at least offers opportunities for beneficial rainfall, something that was largely absent during the recent stretch of hot and dry weather.

Looking Ahead

Temperatures will remain warm this week, with highs generally ranging from the mid-80s to lower 90s. After a brief dip in temperatures Tuesday, heat is expected to build again by late week.

As a result, evaporation rates will remain high, meaning any rainfall that does occur will need to be substantial to have a lasting impact on drought conditions.

For now, Rowan County will continue to watch each storm chance closely, hoping that scattered thunderstorms can begin providing some much-needed relief.

Bottom Line

Rain chances return Monday and continue through much of the week, but the scattered nature of the storms means many areas may receive little rainfall while others see brief downpours. While some localized drought relief is possible, widespread improvement in Rowan County's drought conditions remains unlikely based on the current forecast.
