Drought Monitor Update

Thursday, April 30, 2026 - 9:35am

There’s been no improvement this week across Rowan County — the entire county remains in Extreme Drought (D3).

Even more concerning…

To our south, we’re now seeing areas slipping into Exceptional Drought (D4) — the most severe category on the scale.

What this means:

  • Soil moisture remains very low
  • Streams, ponds, and lakes continue to run below normal
  • Fire danger concerns can return quickly during dry stretches

The good news — we do have rain in the forecast this weekend, and it could be a beneficial soaking rain. But one system alone won’t erase the deficit.

This is something we’ll continue to watch closely in the coming weeks.
