Next Chance for Rain: Will It Actually Help Rowan County?

Monday, April 20, 2026 - 7:56am

After several days of dry weather and minimal rainfall from recent cold fronts, many are asking the same question:

When will we see rain again — and will it actually help?

When Is the Next Chance for Rain?

Right now, the next opportunity for rain looks to arrive late this week into the weekend.

Forecast models suggest:

  • A frontal system approaching Friday night into Saturday
  • Increasing cloud cover and a chance for showers

However, confidence is still limited on how much rain we actually receive.

Will It Be Enough to Help?

At this point, probably not much.

Even though rain chances return, early indications show:

  • Light, scattered rainfall
  • No widespread soaking rain
  • Totals that may struggle to make a meaningful impact

This has been a recurring theme — systems moving through without delivering the kind of rain needed to reduce drought conditions.

Why Haven’t We Had Good Rain?

Several factors have been working against us:

  • Fast-moving cold fronts that don’t have much moisture
  • Dry air in place, which limits rainfall totals
  • A weather pattern favoring high pressure and sunshine

Even when showers develop, they often fall apart or stay light as they move into our area.

What Happens Before the Rain?

Until then, we stay dry and warm:

  • Tuesday: Sunny, near 70°
  • Wednesday: Low 80s
  • Thursday: Mid 80s
  • Friday: Upper 80s

This stretch of warm, dry weather will continue to:

  • Dry out soils
  • Increase fire danger
  • Keep pollen levels elevated

What to Watch Going Forward

We’ll be watching:

  • Whether the system slows down (which could increase rainfall totals)
  • If additional moisture becomes available
  • Whether multiple rounds of rain develop instead of just one

Right now, the setup doesn’t strongly favor a soaking rain.

Bottom Line

  • Next rain chance arrives late week into the weekend
  • Rainfall looks limited at this time
  • Not likely to significantly improve drought conditions
  • Dry and warm weather continues until then
