An Increased Fire Danger is in effect Monday across much of North Carolina, including Rowan, Davie, and Davidson Counties, as well as the foothills, Piedmont, and portions of western North Carolina.

Following minimal rainfall this weekend, dry conditions remain in place, and Monday’s weather setup will create an environment where fires can start easily and spread rapidly.

Two Key Areas of Concern

Central North Carolina (Including Rowan, Davie, Davidson)

  • Timing: 11 AM to 8 PM Monday
  • Humidity dropping to 20–30%
  • Northwest wind gusts 20–30 mph

Western North Carolina (Foothills & Mountains)

  • Timing: Monday morning through evening
  • Humidity falling to below 25% in the foothills and Piedmont
  • Wind gusts up to 25 mph (foothills/Piedmont) and 30 mph (mountains)

While parts of the northern mountains have seen slightly better moisture, most areas remain dry enough to support rapid fire spread.

Why Fire Danger Is Elevated

Several factors are coming together:

  • Very dry vegetation (grass, leaves, brush)
  • Low humidity allowing fuels to dry quickly
  • Gusty winds helping fires spread rapidly

Even small sparks can quickly turn into fast-moving fires under these conditions.

Potential for Higher-End Fire Risk

If humidity drops lower than expected or winds become stronger, Red Flag Warnings may be needed, especially across the foothills and Piedmont.

Burn Ban in Effect

A statewide burn ban remains in place across North Carolina, and all open burning is illegal.

Safety Reminder

Residents are urged to use extreme caution:

  • Properly dispose of cigarettes and matches
  • Avoid using equipment that could create sparks
  • Keep vehicles off dry grass and leaves
  • Do not burn outdoors under any circumstances

Bottom Line

  • Increased fire danger statewide on Monday
  • Worst conditions during the afternoon and early evening
  • Dry air and gusty winds will allow fires to spread quickly
  • Burn ban remains in effect
  • Red Flag Warnings could be issued if conditions worsen
