Frost will be possible Wednesday and Thursday mornings, especially in colder, more sheltered areas.
What’s Causing This?
A cooler, dry air mass has settled into the region behind a recent cold front. With clear skies and light winds at night, conditions are ideal for temperatures to drop quickly after sunset.
That setup allows heat to escape efficiently — a process known as radiational cooling — which is one of the main drivers of frost formation.
When to Watch
- Wednesday Morning: Patchy frost possible, mainly in rural and low-lying areas
- Thursday Morning: Better chance for more widespread frost across the area
Temperatures will generally fall into the upper 30s, but some spots could briefly dip colder — especially outside of town.
Who Is Most at Risk?
Not everyone will see frost, but these areas have the best chance:
- Rural locations
- Low-lying valleys
- Areas away from buildings and pavement
- Spots that tend to cool quickly on clear nights
Urban and more developed areas (like Salisbury and surrounding towns) may stay just warm enough to avoid frost in many cases.
What You Should Do
If you’ve started spring planting, now is the time to take a few simple precautions:
- Cover sensitive plants overnight
- Bring potted plants indoors if possible
- Water plants lightly before sunset (helps retain heat)
- Use cloth or frost covers — avoid plastic directly on plants
Even a light frost can damage early-season growth.
The Good News
This isn’t a long-term cold pattern.
Afternoon temperatures will remain in the 60s, with a warm-up into the 70s by Friday, bringing a quick return to more typical spring conditions.
The Bottom Line
Frost season isn’t quite done yet in Rowan County.
While this won’t be a hard freeze, Wednesday and especially Thursday morning could bring frost to parts of the area, so it’s worth taking a few minutes to protect any sensitive plants.
