Burn Ban Remains in Effect Statewide
An Increased Fire Danger is in place across a large portion of central North Carolina today, including Davidson, Randolph, Stanly, and surrounding counties.
The alert is in effect from 11:00 AM through 8:00 PM Monday, as weather conditions combine with very dry fuels to create a heightened risk for wildfire development and rapid spread.
Why Fire Danger Is Elevated
A dangerous combination of weather and ground conditions is in place:
- Low relative humidity drying out vegetation
- Gusty winds capable of spreading flames quickly
- Very dry fuels, including leaves, grass, and tree litter
Even a small spark could lead to a fast-moving fire under these conditions.
Areas Included
This Increased Fire Danger covers a wide portion of central North Carolina, including:
- The Triad (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point)
- The Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill)
- Sandhills and southern Piedmont communities (Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Sanford, Fayetteville)
- Eastern counties including Rocky Mount, Wilson, Goldsboro, and surrounding areas
Locally, this includes Davidson County and nearby communities across the Piedmont.
Burn Ban Reminder
A statewide burn ban issued by the North Carolina Forest Service remains in effect.
- All open burning is prohibited
- This includes yard debris, fire pits, and any outdoor burning activities
Violations of the burn ban can result in fines and other penalties.
Safety Tips
Residents are urged to take extra precautions today:
- Properly dispose of cigarettes and matches
- Avoid parking vehicles on dry grass or leaves
- Use caution with outdoor equipment that may create sparks
- Secure chains or items that could drag and produce sparks along roadways
What to Expect
Conditions will remain favorable for fire spread through this evening, especially during the warmest and windiest part of the day.
While humidity levels will gradually improve later this week as moisture returns, dry fuels will continue to be a concern until more consistent rainfall develops.
Bottom Line
Fire danger is elevated across central North Carolina today.
Avoid any activities that could spark a fire, and follow the statewide burn ban until conditions improve.
