Increased Fire Danger Monday Across Central North Carolina, Including Davidson County

Published: March 29, 2026
An Increased Fire Danger has been issued for much of central North Carolina on Monday, including Davidson County and surrounding areas, due to very dry conditions and low humidity.
The alert is in effect from 11 AM to 8 PM Monday.
What’s Happening
A combination of low relative humidity and very dry fuels will create an elevated risk for wildfire development across the region.
Even with relatively light winds, these conditions make it easier for fires to start and spread quickly.
This includes areas such as:
- Davidson County (Lexington, Thomasville)
- The Triad (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point)
- The Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill)
- Sandhills and surrounding communities
Why Fire Danger Is Elevated
Several factors are contributing to the increased fire risk:
- Dry air with low humidity levels
- Dry grasses, leaves, and vegetation
- Lack of recent rainfall
- Increasing temperatures
These conditions allow fires to ignite easily and spread rapidly, even from small sparks.
Statewide Burn Ban Still in Effect
A statewide burn ban issued by the North Carolina Forest Service remains in place.
- All open burning is prohibited
- Violations may result in fines and penalties
- This includes burning yard debris, trash, and other outdoor fires
Safety Tips
Residents and visitors are urged to take precautions:
- Properly dispose of cigarettes and matches
- Avoid using equipment that may create sparks
- Keep vehicles off dry grass and leaves
- Do not burn any materials outdoors
Dry vegetation can ignite quickly, and fires may spread faster than expected under these conditions.
Looking Ahead
While conditions remain dry to start the week, a gradual increase in moisture is expected later in the week.
- Warmer temperatures will continue
- Rain and storm chances begin to return midweek
- Any rainfall could help reduce fire danger moving forward
Bottom Line
Fire danger will be elevated across central North Carolina on Monday, including Davidson County. With a burn ban in place and very dry conditions, it’s important to avoid any activities that could spark a fire.
Stay safe and stay weather aware.
