An Increased Fire Danger continues across the region today, including Rowan, Davie, and Davidson counties, as dry air and very low humidity combine with dry vegetation to create elevated wildfire risk.
What’s Happening
A very dry air mass remains in place across the Carolinas this afternoon, with relative humidity values expected to drop between 15% and 25% across much of the Piedmont.
Even though winds will remain relatively light — generally 5 to 10 mph — the combination of dry air and dry fuels will allow fires to start easily and spread quickly.
Statewide Burn Ban Remains in Effect
Both North Carolina and South Carolina remain under statewide burn bans until further notice.
This means:
- All open burning is prohibited
- Violations can result in fines and penalties
- The ban applies to all outdoor burning, including yard debris and fire pits
Why Fire Danger Is Elevated
Several factors are coming together to increase fire risk:
- Very low humidity (as low as 15%)
- Dry grasses, leaves, and vegetation
- Limited recent rainfall
- Increasing temperatures heading into the week
Even a small spark can quickly lead to a fast-spreading fire under these conditions.
Safety Tips for Today
Residents across Rowan, Davie, and Davidson counties should take extra precautions:
- Properly dispose of cigarettes and matches
- Avoid parking vehicles on dry grass or leaves
- Use caution with equipment that may create sparks
- Do not burn yard debris or trash
- Secure trailer chains to prevent roadside sparks
Looking Ahead
Conditions will begin to slowly change heading into the middle of the week.
- Warmer temperatures and increasing moisture are expected
- Shower and thunderstorm chances return by Wednesday and Thursday
- Rainfall could help reduce fire danger later this week
Until then, fire risk will remain elevated each afternoon.
Bottom Line
Sunday brings another day of heightened fire danger across Rowan, Davie, and Davidson counties. With a statewide burn ban in place and very dry conditions ongoing, it’s important to avoid any activities that could spark a fire.
