An Increased Fire Danger statement is in effect through the day Sunday across much of central and western North Carolina.
What’s Driving the Continued Fire Risk
While moisture will begin to slowly recover, conditions will still favor fire growth:
- Relative humidity between 20% and 35%
- Very dry vegetation and fuels
- Light winds, but enough to support fire spread
Even though winds won’t be as strong as Saturday, the landscape has already dried out significantly, allowing fires to ignite and spread quickly.
Statewide Burn Ban Remains in Effect
A statewide burn ban is currently in place across North Carolina, including Rowan, Davie, and Davidson counties.
- All open burning is prohibited
- This includes leaves, yard debris, and any outdoor burning
- Violations can result in fines
South Carolina is also under a burn ban, highlighting just how widespread the fire risk is across the region.
Why This Still Matters Sunday
Even with lighter winds, it doesn’t take much to start a fire in these conditions.
Dry grasses, leaves, and other debris can ignite easily and spread rapidly, especially during the afternoon when humidity is lowest.
Safety Reminders
Residents are urged to take precautions:
- Do not burn outdoors under any circumstances
- Properly dispose of cigarettes and matches
- Avoid using equipment that may create sparks
- Keep vehicles off dry grass
Looking Ahead
Fire danger may continue to be a concern into early next week until moisture levels increase and more widespread rainfall arrives by midweek.
Until then, conditions remain favorable for wildfire activity across the area.
