Increased Fire Danger This Afternoon Across Rowan County and Central NC

Monday, March 23, 2026 - 6:04am

An Increased Fire Danger Statement has been issued for Rowan County and much of central North Carolina today from 3 PM to 10 PM, as weather conditions become favorable for the rapid spread of wildfires.

Why Fire Danger Is Elevated Today

A combination of key factors will create a higher wildfire risk this afternoon and evening:

  • Low humidity dropping to around 25–30%
  • Wind gusts between 20–30 mph
  • Very dry fuels, including grass, leaves, and tree debris

These conditions make it easier for fires to start and spread quickly, even from small sparks.

What This Means for Rowan County

While no widespread fires are currently ongoing, the environment is highly receptive to fire ignition. Even routine outdoor activities could unintentionally spark a fire.

Dry grasses, fallen leaves, and other debris can ignite easily and allow flames to spread rapidly—especially with gusty winds in place this afternoon.

Fire Safety Reminders

Residents are urged to take extra precautions today:

  • Properly dispose of cigarette butts and matches
  • Avoid parking vehicles on dry grass
  • Use caution with equipment that may create sparks
  • Do not burn debris unless it is explicitly allowed

Check Local Burn Restrictions

Always follow any local burn bans or restrictions that may be in place.

Bottom Line

Today’s combination of dry air, gusty winds, and dry vegetation means fires can start easily and spread quickly.

Taking a few extra precautions can help prevent dangerous wildfire situations across Rowan County.
