Temperatures across Rowan County are climbing into the mid to upper 80s this afternoon—levels we’d typically expect in late June or early July, not late March. In fact, we’re flirting with record highs for this time of year.
But don’t get too used to it.
A big change is already on the way.
Today: Peak Warmth
Sunday is the warmest day of this stretch.
With sunshine and a southwest breeze, temperatures will surge into the mid to upper 80s across the county. It’s the kind of day that feels perfect for getting outside—but it’s also the peak before the pattern flips.
Monday: The Transition Day
A cold front moves through the region late tonight into Monday.
You likely won’t notice much in terms of rain—this is a dry front—but you will notice the wind.
- Winds could gust over 20 mph
- Temperatures will still reach the mid to upper 70s
- Air will begin drying out quickly
By Monday afternoon, that cooler, drier air starts taking over.
Tuesday: Big Drop
This is where the change really shows up.
Highs on Tuesday fall back into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees—a drop of nearly 25–30 degrees from Sunday’s warmth.
It will feel much more like early spring again, especially with a light northeast breeze.
Why Such a Big Swing?
This is classic spring in North Carolina.
Warm air surges in ahead of a cold front, giving us those summer-like days. Once the front passes, cooler and much drier air moves in quickly behind it—leading to sharp temperature drops like the one we’ll see early this week.
One Thing to Watch: Fire Danger
With dry air moving in and gusty winds on Monday, conditions could become favorable for increased fire danger—especially in areas that haven’t seen much recent rainfall.
It’s something to keep in mind if you’re doing any outdoor burning.
The Rest of the Week
After the cooldown, temperatures gradually rebound:
- Wednesday: Mid to upper 60s
- Thursday: Back into the upper 70s
That means we’re right back into a more typical spring pattern by the end of the week.
Bottom Line
Enjoy the summer preview today—because it doesn’t last long.
A cold front arrives tonight, winds pick up Monday, and much cooler air settles in by Tuesday before we warm back up later in the week.
