A surge of warm air ahead of an approaching cold front is set to push temperatures into the mid to upper 80s across the Piedmont on Friday, putting us within striking distance of record highs for this time of year.
How Close Are We to Records?
At Charlotte Douglas International Airport, the record high for March 27 is 85°, set back in 1950.
Forecast highs for Friday:
- Rowan County: 86–88°
- Davie County: Mid 80s
- Davidson County: Upper 80s
That means some locations could tie or even break records if temperatures overperform by just a degree or two.
Why Is It So Warm?
This warm-up is being driven by a classic setup:
- A strong ridge of high pressure to the south
- Southwest winds pulling in warmer air
- Downsloping winds off the mountains adding an extra boost
All of this combines to create temperatures running 20+ degrees above average for late March.

As quickly as the warmth arrives, it’s gone.
A cold front will move through Friday evening, bringing:
- A brief chance of showers (and possibly a rumble of thunder)
- Gusty winds overnight
- A sharp drop in temperatures
