Rowan County Drought Update

Thursday, March 5, 2026 - 2:56pm

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows drought conditions continuing to worsen across Rowan County.

Extreme Drought (Red):
Parts of southern Rowan County, including areas around Kannapolis, Landis, Rockwell, and China Grove, are now classified in Extreme Drought.

Severe Drought (Orange):
The rest of Rowan County, including Salisbury, Spencer, Cleveland, and Granite Quarry, remains in Severe Drought.

These classifications reflect long-term rainfall deficits, dry soils, and stressed vegetation across the region.

While we have seen occasional rain recently, it has not been enough to significantly improve drought conditions.

What this means:
• Soil moisture remains very low
• Ponds and small streams may be below normal levels
• Vegetation stress will continue
• Fire risk can increase during dry and windy days

We will continue to monitor conditions closely as we move deeper into spring rainfall season, which is typically when drought improvement begins.
