Special Weather Statement: Patchy Dense Fog Across the North Carolina Piedmont

Saturday, February 28, 2026 - 7:08pm

A Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg highlights the potential for patchy dense fog to develop overnight across portions of the North Carolina Piedmont — including Rowan County and surrounding areas.

While conditions this evening may appear quiet, visibility could drop quickly in spots later tonight and toward daybreak.

Where Fog Is Most Likely

The greatest concern is along and near the I-40 corridor, from Old Fort eastward through Statesville and into the central Piedmont.

Areas included in the statement cover:

  • Rowan

  • Davie

  • Iredell

  • Catawba

  • Cabarrus

  • Mecklenburg

  • Gaston

  • Lincoln

  • Cleveland

  • Alexander

  • Portions of the foothills and adjacent mountain communities

Cities such as Salisbury, Statesville, Mocksville, Hickory, Concord, and Charlotte could see locally dense fog develop overnight.

What to Expect

  • Patchy fog developing late tonight

  • Isolated areas of dense fog with visibility under one-quarter mile

  • Rapid visibility changes over short distances

Fog tends to form in low-lying areas, near bodies of water, and in spots where the ground remains moist from recent humidity.

Travel Safety Reminders

If you encounter fog overnight or early Sunday morning:

  • Slow down

  • Increase following distance

  • Use low-beam headlights

  • Be prepared for sudden drops in visibility

Conditions should gradually improve after sunrise Sunday as temperatures rise and mixing begins.

I’ll continue monitoring trends overnight and provide updates if visibility concerns increase.
