How Much Rain Will Rowan County Actually See Thursday?

Wednesday, February 25, 2026 - 8:18am

After a breezy and mostly cloudy Wednesday, steadier rain is set to move into Rowan County late tonight and continue through much of Thursday — especially during the morning hours.

The big question many are asking:

How much rain are we actually going to get?

Let’s break it down.

The Most Likely Rainfall Totals

Current guidance suggests most of Rowan County will receive:

1” to 2” of rainfall

That would be a solid, beneficial soaking — especially given ongoing dry conditions across the region.

Rain is expected to:

  • Develop after midnight

  • Become widespread by sunrise Thursday

  • Be heaviest during the morning

  • Gradually taper Thursday afternoon into Friday

Could Anyone See More Than That?

While 1–2 inches now looks like a reasonable range for many areas, localized pockets could still exceed that if heavier bands set up and persist.

For higher totals to occur:

  • A narrow band of enhanced lift would need to stall

  • Deep moisture would need to remain focused overhead

  • Rainfall rates would need to stay steady for several hours

Confidence is growing in a widespread soaking, but exact placement of the heaviest banding will determine who ends up on the higher end of totals.

What About Flooding?

Even with 1–2 inches:

  • The rain will fall over several hours

  • It is not expected to come in intense thunderstorm bursts

  • River levels are not elevated

  • Severe weather is not anticipated

Localized ponding in low-lying areas is possible, but widespread flooding concerns remain low at this time.

Why This Rain Is Helpful

This system should provide:

  • Soil moisture recharge

  • Reduced fire danger

  • Improved lawn and garden conditions

  • A boost for area water resources

Given recent dry stretches, this rainfall is more beneficial than problematic.

What Happens After the Rain?

Showers taper Friday, especially from northwest to southeast.

By Saturday and Sunday:

  • Sunshine returns

  • Highs climb into the upper 60s

  • Near 70° is possible Sunday

A much nicer finish to the week.
