So what’s going on?
The Main Factors
Three ingredients are coming together:
1. Very Dry Air
Relative humidity levels this afternoon are expected to fall into the 25–30% range, and even lower on Tuesday (15–20%).
When humidity drops this low, vegetation dries out quickly — especially fine fuels like grass, leaves, and small brush. That means fires can spread faster than you might expect.
2. Gusty Winds
Northwest winds today are gusting between 25 and 35 mph at times.
Wind plays a major role in fire behavior. It helps flames spread more rapidly and can carry embers well ahead of a fire line. Even small outdoor burns can quickly get out of control under gusty conditions.
3. Limited Recent Rainfall in Some Areas
While parts of central North Carolina picked up a quarter to half inch of rain recently, not all locations received meaningful totals.
Across portions of the Piedmont — including parts of Rowan County — rainfall amounts were lighter. That means the surface fuels can dry out quickly under sunshine, wind, and low humidity.
What About Temperatures?
Highs are only in the 40s today, which helps limit fire intensity somewhat. Cooler temperatures slow the drying process compared to summer heat.
However, wind and low humidity can still offset that benefit.
What Changes Next?
Winds begin to ease tonight and remain lighter Tuesday, but humidity will remain very low.
Conditions improve midweek as:
-
Temperatures rise into the upper 50s and near 60°
-
Moisture gradually increases ahead of a late-week system
-
Rain chances increase Thursday into early Friday
That next system should help reduce fire concerns heading into the weekend.
Bottom Line for Rowan County
Fire danger is elevated today and Tuesday due to:
-
Low humidity
-
Gusty winds
-
Dry surface fuels
Avoid outdoor burning, use caution with anything that produces sparks, and never leave a fire unattended.
Even in cooler weather, early spring fire conditions can develop quickly.
More updates as conditions evolve.
