Fire Danger Returns to Rowan County: Why Dry Air + Gusty Winds Are a Bad Combination

Rowan County is seeing a brief return to winter-like conditions — but the bigger concern isn’t just the cold.

It’s the combination of very dry air and gusty northwest winds that will elevate fire danger through Tuesday.

What’s Happening?

Behind a departing coastal low, strong northwest winds are pulling much drier air into the Piedmont. Afternoon relative humidity values are expected to drop into the 20–30% range, which is considered near-critical for fire weather concerns.

At the same time, wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph are expected today and Monday.

That combination can allow fires to start easily and spread quickly.

Why Dry Air Matters

When humidity drops into the 20–30% range:

• Vegetation dries out rapidly

• Fine fuels like leaves, pine needles, and grass become more flammable

• Any spark can spread faster than expected

Even though we’ve had some recent rainfall, amounts were light and not enough to significantly reduce fire risk.

The Wind Factor

Northwest winds will remain gusty through Monday, occasionally higher at times.

Wind does two important things during fire events:

1. Supplies oxygen to flames

2. Pushes embers ahead of the fire, allowing spot fires to ignite

This is why windy, dry days are closely monitored by meteorologists and emergency management officials.

Should You Be Concerned?

This is not a Red Flag Warning situation at this time, but it is an elevated fire danger period.

Residents should:

• Avoid outdoor burning

• Use caution with grills and fire pits

• Secure trailer chains to prevent roadway sparks

• Avoid parking hot vehicles in dry grass

• Properly dispose of cigarettes

Even small fires can get out of control quickly under these conditions.

How Long Will This Last?

Near-critical fire weather conditions are expected each afternoon through Tuesday.

Humidity levels improve slightly by midweek as temperatures warm and winds relax. A stronger system late Thursday into Friday may bring more widespread rainfall.

Until then, dry air and gusty winds will remain the primary concern.
