Rowan County Drought Monitor Update Extreme Drought Expands Across Southern Rowan

Thursday, February 12, 2026 - 10:53am

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows worsening conditions across Rowan County this week.

What’s Changed

Southern Rowan County is now in Extreme Drought (D3)
This includes areas around:

China Grove

Landis

Kannapolis

Faith

Rockwell

The remainder of Rowan County remains in Severe Drought (D2)

This marks a significant intensification of drought conditions, particularly across the southern tier of the county.

What “Extreme Drought” Means

Extreme Drought (D3) typically indicates:

Major crop and pasture losses

Increased wildfire risk

Water restrictions becoming more likely

Very low streamflows and pond levels

Severe Drought (D2) conditions still bring:

Stressed lawns and vegetation

Dry soils several inches down

Falling groundwater levels

Continued fire danger concerns

What You May Be Noticing

Across Rowan County, residents are likely seeing:

Hard, compacted soil

Early browning of grass

Low creeks and farm ponds

Increased brush fire risk on breezy days

High Rock Lake levels and smaller tributaries will continue to be closely watched in the coming weeks.

What Happens Next?

We will need:

Multiple widespread soaking rain events

Slow, steady rainfall rather than quick heavy downpours

Above-normal precipitation over several weeks

One storm system will not erase Extreme or Severe Drought conditions.

I’ll continue monitoring weekly updates and any fire danger statements or water advisories that may follow.
