The Quick Warmup to the 60s: Why Temperatures Jump So Fast This Week

Sunday, February 8, 2026 - 8:20am

If today feels more like winter, don’t get too comfortable — a rapid warmup is already underway.

After starting the day in the 20s and 30s with clouds and even a few flurries in spots, temperatures across central North Carolina will climb quickly over the next 48 hours. By Tuesday, many locations will be back into the low 60s, a swing of more than 25 degrees in just a couple of days.

What’s Causing the Warmup?

The key change is happening in the upper levels of the atmosphere.

Over the weekend, cold northwest flow dominated the region, keeping temperatures suppressed and allowing cold air to settle in. As we move into early week, that pattern relaxes and flatter upper-level ridging begins to build eastward from the Gulf States.

As that ridge strengthens:

  • Cold air drains out quickly

  • Winds turn lighter and eventually southwesterly

  • Sunshine becomes more dominant

The result is a fast rebound in daytime highs.

Day-by-Day Temperature Trend

  • Sunday: Highs stuck in the mid-30s with clouds and a chilly feel

  • Monday: Mostly sunny, highs in the mid-40s

  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny and noticeably warmer, highs climbing into the low 60s

That’s a classic February temperature jump — sharp, fast, and very noticeable.

Is This Normal for February?

Surprisingly, yes.

February is known for some of the biggest temperature swings of the year. Cold air masses are still capable of reaching the Carolinas, but the sun angle is getting stronger, and warm air can return quickly once patterns shift.

It’s not unusual this time of year to go from winter coats one day to light jackets just a few days later.

Will the Warmth Last?

Not indefinitely.

While temperatures remain above normal into mid-week, rain chances return Wednesday, and a more unsettled pattern develops late in the week. That could allow cooler air to move back in heading toward the weekend.

For now, enjoy the early-week warmth — it’s a reminder that spring isn’t far off, even if winter still has a few cards left to play.
