Sunday’s Wintry Mix: What We’re Watching & Why Impacts Look Limited
A weather system moving through the Carolinas late Saturday night into Sunday morning will bring a brief window for wintry precipitation across parts of central North Carolina. While snow and freezing rain are possible, impacts currently appear limited for Rowan, Davie, and Davidson Counties.
Here’s what we’re watching and why confidence in significant impacts remains low.
The Setup
A cold front and upper-level disturbance will move across the region late Saturday night and early Sunday. Moisture will be limited, and surface temperatures will be hovering close to freezing during the early morning hours Sunday.
That combination creates the potential for rain briefly mixing with freezing rain or snow, especially near daybreak.
However, several limiting factors remain in place.
Rowan County
In Rowan County, the main window to watch is early Sunday morning, roughly between 4 AM and 10 AM.
• A brief mix of rain, freezing rain, or snow is possible
• Temperatures will be marginal for accumulation
• Any snow would be light and short-lived
At this time, little to no accumulation is expected. If snow occurs, it would most likely be on elevated surfaces like decks, rooftops, and grassy areas. Roads should remain mostly wet.
Davie County
Davie County may see a similar setup, with slightly more potential for a brief wintry mix early Sunday morning.
• Freezing rain is possible near daybreak
• Snow may mix in later in the morning
• Temperatures should rise quickly enough to limit impacts
Any icing would be very light and isolated. Snow accumulation, if it occurs, would be minimal and short-lived.
Davidson County
Davidson County has the highest chance of seeing snow, particularly north and east portions of the county.
• Snow is possible mainly before early afternoon Sunday
• Light accumulation under one-half inch is possible
• Most accumulation would favor elevated surfaces
Even here, impacts are expected to be minor, with temperatures and limited moisture working against heavier snowfall.
Why Impacts Look Limited
Several factors are keeping this system in check:
• Moisture is limited and precipitation rates look light
• Ground temperatures are relatively warm
• Surface temperatures hover close to freezing, not well below
• Any wintry precipitation is brief
Confidence remains low that conditions align long enough to produce meaningful accumulation.
What Could Change?
Forecast confidence remains lower than usual. Small shifts in temperature or moisture could change precipitation type for a short time. That said, the overall trend continues toward lower impacts, not higher.
This is not shaping up to be a clear-cut winter weather event.
Bottom Line
• A brief wintry mix is possible early Sunday
• Snow or ice, if it occurs, will be light and short-lived
• Widespread travel impacts are not expected
• Colder air settles in Sunday night and into next week
Rowan County Weather will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if confidence or impacts increase.
Check back for updates through the weekend.
