Coldest Night of the Season Ahead: What to Expect Across Rowan, Davie & Davidson Counties

Wednesday, January 14, 2026 - 8:11am

A sharp blast of winter air is moving into central North Carolina, setting the stage for the coldest night of the season so far across Rowan, Davie, and Davidson counties late Thursday night into early Friday morning.

While this cold snap will not approach record levels, it will be a noticeable change from recent conditions and will bring the coldest temperatures many locations have experienced this winter.

What’s Driving the Cold?

A strong cold front is sweeping through the region, followed by a dry but very cold air mass from the northwest. Behind the front, clearing skies, lighter winds overnight, and dry air will allow temperatures to fall quickly.

Daytime sunshine on Thursday will be misleading — despite clear skies, cold air advection and gusty northwest winds will keep temperatures well below normal.

Expected Temperatures by County

Rowan County

  • Thursday high: Mid 30s

  • Thursday night low: Around 15 degrees

  • Wind chills Thursday evening: Single digits to lower teens

Davie County

  • Thursday high: Mid 30s

  • Thursday night low: Near 15 degrees

  • Wind chills Thursday evening: Lower teens

Davidson County

  • Thursday high: Mid 30s

  • Thursday night low: Near 15 degrees

  • Wind chills Thursday evening: Around 15 degrees

These values will make Thursday night the coldest of the season so far for many areas.

What This Means Locally

  • Sensitive pipes could be at risk in poorly insulated or exposed areas

  • Pets should be brought indoors or provided adequate shelter

  • Outdoor plants and early budding vegetation could be damaged

  • Anyone outdoors Thursday evening should dress for winter conditions

Despite the cold start, temperatures will begin a gradual rebound heading into the weekend, with highs returning to the 40s Friday and near 50 by Saturday.

Looking Ahead

The weekend will bring milder daytime temperatures, though overnight lows will remain cold. Another cool-down is possible late Sunday, but confidence in additional winter precipitation east of the mountains remains low at this time.

Rowan County Weather will continue monitoring the evolving forecast and provide updates if anything changes.
