What Today’s General Thunderstorm Risk Means for Rowan, Davie & Davidson Counties

Saturday, January 10, 2026 - 8:32am

A General Thunderstorm Risk is in place today across Rowan, Davie, and Davidson Counties, and while thunderstorms are possible, this setup is not expected to produce widespread severe weather.

Here’s what that actually means — and what it doesn’t.

What Is a General Thunderstorm Risk?

The General Thunderstorm category is the lowest thunderstorm designation issued by the Storm Prediction Center.

It means:

  • Thunderstorms are possible

  • Severe storms are not expected to be widespread

  • Any stronger storm would likely be isolated and brief

This category is used on days when thunder can occur, but the overall environment does not support organized severe weather.

What We’re Expecting Today

Across Rowan, Davie, and Davidson Counties, storms today will be embedded within widespread rain, rather than forming as strong, discrete storms.

The main impacts today:

  • Periods of steady rain

  • Occasional lightning

  • Brief gusty winds

  • Localized heavier downpours

Most locations will simply experience rain with a few rumbles of thunder, especially from late morning through early evening.

Is Severe Weather Possible?

The severe threat today is low, but not zero.

A stronger storm could briefly produce:

  • Gusty winds

  • Heavy rain in a short time

However:

  • Widespread damaging winds are not expected

  • Hail is unlikely

  • Tornado risk is very low

This is a high-shear, low-instability setup — meaning the wind pattern is strong, but the energy needed for storms to intensify is limited.

Why Thunderstorms Are Even Possible

Several ingredients are coming together today:

  • Unseasonably warm air

  • Widespread moisture

  • A cold front approaching from the west

What’s missing is strong instability, which keeps storms from becoming severe.

As the cold front moves through later today and tonight, rain and thunder will gradually taper off.

County-by-County Snapshot

Rowan County:
Rain through much of the day with isolated thunder possible this afternoon and early evening. Breezy at times ahead of the front.

Davie County:
Periods of rain with thunderstorms possible later today. Locally heavier rainfall totals are possible, but flooding concerns remain low.

Davidson County:
Rain and a chance of thunderstorms later today. Gusty winds are more noticeable here, especially ahead of the cold front.

The Bottom Line

Today is about wet and breezy conditions, not severe weather.

If you hear thunder:

  • Move indoors

  • Avoid outdoor activities briefly

  • Resume once storms pass

Rain ends later tonight, followed by much cooler and drier air for Sunday and early next week.

Rowan County Weather will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates if anything changes.
