Why Fog Was So Widespread This Morning Across Rowan, Davie & Davidson Counties

Tuesday, January 6, 2026 - 8:41am

If you were outside early this morning or traveling before sunrise, you likely encountered widespread fog across the western Piedmont. Visibility dropped to a quarter mile or less in some locations, making for a slow and difficult morning commute in parts of Rowan, Davie, and Davidson Counties.

Here’s why fog became so widespread this morning, and why this setup is common during warmer stretches in January.

Warm Air and Moist Ground

A mild January air mass remains in place across the region, keeping overnight temperatures relatively warm. When warm, moisture-rich air settles near the ground, it can cool just enough to reach saturation. At that point, moisture condenses into fog.

This process is most efficient when:

  • Temperatures remain mild overnight

  • Humidity is high

  • The ground cools faster than the air above it

Light Winds Allowed Fog to Develop

Winds were light to calm overnight, which prevented the atmosphere from mixing. Without mixing, moisture becomes trapped near the surface, allowing fog to thicken instead of dispersing.

Once winds increase later in the morning, fog typically begins to lift.

Why Fog Was Patchy and Uneven

Fog does not form uniformly. The thickest fog usually develops:

  • In low-lying areas and valleys

  • Near creeks, rivers, and farmland

  • Along rural and secondary roads

That’s why visibility could vary significantly over short distances.

Why Fog Improves After Sunrise

After sunrise, several changes help fog dissipate:

  • The ground warms

  • Air near the surface begins to mix

  • Light winds increase

These factors usually allow fog to lift by mid to late morning.

Fog Safety Reminder

Fog can be deceptive and dangerous, especially during the morning commute.

Drivers should:

  • Use low-beam headlights

  • Reduce speed and increase following distance

  • Watch closely for school buses and flashing lights

  • Be prepared for rapid visibility changes

Looking Ahead

Patchy fog remains possible on upcoming mornings as long as mild overnight temperatures, light winds, and lingering moisture continue. Not every morning will see dense fog, but conditions remain favorable for fog development at times this week.
