How Today’s Arctic Front Is Expected to Affect Rowan, Davie, and Davidson Counties: A Regional Look Ahead

Sunday, December 14, 2025 - 8:21am

A strong Arctic cold front is moving into the region today, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures, gusty northwest winds, and the coldest air of the season so far. While all three counties will feel the effects, each will experience the transition a little differently due to timing, terrain, and wind patterns. Here is a forward-looking comparison of what to expect across Rowan, Davie, and Davidson Counties as the colder air arrives.

When Temperatures Will Begin Falling

Rowan County

Temperatures are expected to begin falling shortly after daybreak as the front pushes through. The most noticeable drop will occur from late morning into early afternoon, with readings sliding into the 20s by day’s end.

Davie County

Davie County, which sits directly north of Rowan, may feel the colder air push in just slightly earlier. Temperatures will steadily fall through the morning, reaching the upper 20s by late afternoon.

Davidson County

Davidson County is expected to cool quickly once the front passes. Strong northwest winds will push temperatures downward through the day, with mid-20s expected by the evening hours.

Expected Wind and Wind Chill Impacts

Rowan County

Northwest winds of 11–14 mph with gusts near 25 mph are expected. Wind chills will drop into the teens by late afternoon and evening.

Davie County

Davie will see similar wind speeds, though gusts may ease slightly sooner than in Rowan. Wind chills are expected to fall into the upper teens through the afternoon, potentially dipping lower toward sunset.

Davidson County

Davidson County is expected to experience the strongest winds of the three counties, with gusts up to 30 mph. This will drive wind chills into the lower to mid-teens, making conditions feel colder than in Rowan or Davie.

Sky Conditions Behind the Front

Rowan County

Clearing skies are expected by mid-morning. Sunshine will return but will not offset the incoming Arctic air.

Davie County

Davie should clear out around the same time as Rowan, with dry and breezy conditions taking over by late morning.

Davidson County

Clouds may linger a bit longer in the early day due to moisture along and ahead of the front, but clearing is expected by midday.

Tonight’s Expected Lows

Rowan County

Lows are expected to fall into the mid-teens, with single-digit wind chills possible.

Davie County

Davie will be similarly cold, with lows in the mid-teens and calmer winds late tonight.

Davidson County

Davidson County is forecast to be the coldest of the three, with lows in the low teens and wind chills dipping toward the single digits early in the night.

What This Means for the Region

  • Rowan County will see steady cooling and quick clearing behind the front.

  • Davie County, located directly north of Rowan, may see the cold air settle in slightly earlier, with a similar temperature and wind profile.

  • Davidson County is expected to experience the strongest winds and lowest wind chills, making conditions more severe at times.

All three counties will begin a gradual warm-up starting Tuesday, returning to near-normal temperatures by midweek and approaching 60 degrees by Thursday.
